Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

Conclave 2024

The transitioning world order brings with it a trove of opportunities for the betterment of humanity. Actions that are taken today will shape the world for centuries to come, therefore leaders must make responsible decisions. To discuss and deliberate on the issues of the present world order and the potential of the new one, Jyot (a not-for-profit and an apolitical NGO) organised two conclaves titled ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ki Oar’ in 2022 and 2023.

These conclaves play a vital role in promoting special education, on the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family), thus preserving and propagating the rich heritage and values of Indian culture.

Coming to 2024, the year marked a unique convergence of three landmark milestones in India’s constitutional history. India was in the 75th year of its Constitution, which is said to establish its sovereignty as an independent republic. It marked the 51st year of the Basic Structure Doctrine, laid down in the historic Kesavananda Bharati case, a principle that delineated the scope of the State’s power to amend its foundational principles. Additionally, this year marked the 30th anniversary of the S. R. Bommai judgement, which recognised secularism as a key element of the Basic Structure of the Constitution. Each of these milestones represents a vast field of jurisprudence.

Additionally, the year marked the 2550th year after the Nirvana of Tirthankar Shri Mahavir Swami, signifying a profound convergence of constitutional and spiritual milestones.

And so, this year the conclave returned with ‘legal’ and ‘geopolitical’ themes in its ‘third edition’. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ki Oar 3.0 witnessed a gathering of legal luminaries, geopolitical scholars and thought leaders under the aegis of the 79th successor of Tirthankar Shri Mahavir Swami, His Holiness Shri Yugbhushansuriji.

Considering the significance of this unique convergence, the conclave returned with ‘legal’ and ‘geopolitical’ themes in its ‘third edition’ this year.

‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ki Oar 3.0’ witnessed a nuanced gathering of legal luminaries, geopolitical scholars and thought leaders under the aegis of the 79th successor of Tirthankar Shri Mahavir Swami, His Holiness Shri Yugbhushansuriji.

The inaugural legal theme focussed on 'Sovereignty, Basic Structure Doctrine and Secularism', while the geopolitical theme addressed 'Global Trust, Multipolarity and the Role of Vishwabandhu Bharat'.

The conclave was organised by Jyot in association with a host of partners, at Gitarth Ganga, Ahmedabad on 14th and 15th December, 2024.

DAY 1

LEGAL

The legal theme, ‘Sovereignty, Basic Structure Doctrine, and Secularism’, focussed on the incisive questions sent to the panellists prior to the event. The questions shared were relevant to contemporary times and explored both national and international jurisprudence. The panel critically and objectively evaluated the current legal frameworks, emphasising that laws and jurisprudence must reflect the traditions, beliefs, and cultures of the people they serve.

DAY 2

GEOPOLITICAL

The theme of ‘Global trust, multipolarity and the role of Vishwabandhu Bharat’ continued the exploration of a new, free, fair, and just world order. With a focus on implementing ideas from previous conclaves, this edition addressed the challenge of declining global trust and its impact on shaping a multipolar world, while highlighting the key role Bharat (India) could play as Vishwabandhu, in this evolving order.

Justice M R Shah

Former Judge, Supreme Court of India

“The current state of the world reflects ongoing conflicts between communities and religions, highlighting the challenges we observe globally. The solution lies in embracing the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the belief, as taught by our scriptures, that the world is one family.”

Justice Mohit Shah

Former Chief Justice, Bombay High Court

“The conclave was very well organised — visiting Gitarth Ganga preserving our culture in digital format, going around the exhibition with so much research in a complex subject like Sovereignty, to which other spiritual organisations do not even give a thought, searching answers to questions on Sovereignty, Basic Structure of Constitution and Secularism made the discussions so interesting and lively.”

Shri Vikramjit Banerjee

Additional Solicitor General of India, Supreme Court

“The initiative to convene such a meaningful gathering, bringing together religious and national thought leaders to contemplate the future of India and the profound principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, is commendable and inspiring.”

ARYA PARAMPARA

AN EXHIBIT

The exhibition explored the merging of temporal and spiritual sovereignty, its impact on current global turmoil, and constitutional frameworks, with a focus on India’s Basic Structure Doctrine. It examined Eastern and Western views of secularism, featuring insights from Jainacharya, highlighted the global trust deficit, depicted the journey of the world order from multipolarity in the past to the present-day rising multipolar world order, and proposed abolition of the UN Veto as an indicative solution to restore faith. The presentation concluded with scriptural wisdom and messages from His Holiness.
